When and How to Use a Brief IEP

A Brief IEP may be used for ARD (Admission, Review, and Dismissal) meetings that are not annual IEP meetings. The Brief IEP streamlines documentation when a full annual IEP is not required, while still maintaining compliance and proper documentation of committee decisions.

The Brief IEP pulls forward data from the most recently locked ARD/IEP and allows the committee to document specific changes, reviews, or determinations.

Suggested Uses for Brief IEPs

Note: Always refer to local operating guidelines regarding appropriate use of the Brief IEP.

Brief IEPs are commonly used for:

  • Any ARD meeting that is not an annual IEP
  • Dismissal and/or DNQ (Did Not Qualify) ARDs
  • Manifestation Determination Review (MDR) ARDs
  • Review of updated evaluation data
  • Changes to instructional accommodations
  • Changes to state testing accommodations
  • Addition or removal of related services
  • Addition of goals and/or objectives
  • Correction of the Instructional Arrangement (PEIMS) code on “Section IV. Determination of Services to Be Provided” due to clerical error
Note: Related Forms: Contact Log, Notice of IEP Meeting, Procedural Safeguards Log; Required Fields: Brief IEP Date, Services Start Date, and Parent 1 Name

How to Create a Brief IEP

  1. Navigate to the student’s “Student Forms” page.
  2. Select Brief Individualized Education Program (IEP) from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click New Draft.
  4. Complete or edit the necessary sections.
  5. Click Save and Lock according to district procedures.

The Brief IEP imports data from the last locked ARD/IEP.

Note: A Notice of IEP Meeting is required when conducting a Brief IEP meeting.

Dismissals and DNQs (Using a Brief IEP)

For Dismissal or DNQ (Did Not Qualify) ARDs, complete the following sections:

  • Brief IEP Meeting Title Page
  • Section I. Review of Evaluation Data
  • Section II. Determination of Eligibility
  • Section IX. Committee Membership
  • Section X: Deliberations

Because the “Schedule of Services” page is not included in a Dismissal or DNQ meeting, a "Services Start Date" is required on the “Brief IEP Meeting Title Page.”

Upon locking a Dismissal or DNQ ARD:

  • The system automatically updates the student’s status on the “Program Compliance” screen.
  • The student’s status changes from an active status to "Dismissal" or "DNQ."
Note: Once a student’s status is no longer active ("Active," "Initial," "Private/Home," "Transferred"), forms cannot be unlocked. If corrections are required, a District Administrator must temporarily return the student to an active status before unlocking the meeting.
