An amendment to the Individualized Education Program (IEP) allows revisions to a student’s IEP without convening an ARD (Admission, Review, and Dismissal) meeting, provided that both the parent and the Local Educational Agency (LEA) agree that a meeting is not necessary.
The amendment process is intended for limited revisions and cannot be used for certain required committee decisions.
When an Amendment to the IEP Cannot Be Used
An amendment may not be used for the following, per [34 CFR §300.324(a)(4), §300.324(a)(6), §300.116, §300.306, §300.530(e)]:
- Determination of eligibility
- Change of placement
- Manifestation Determination Review
These actions require an ARD committee meeting and cannot be completed through an amendment.
Suggested Uses for an Amendment to the IEP
An amendment to the IEP may be used to:
- Update instructional accommodations
- Update state testing accommodations
- Correct clerical errors
The amendment form pulls data from the most recently locked ARD/IEP and allows you to edit only the necessary sections.

Unless required by local district guidelines, a Notice of IEP Meeting is not required when completing an amendment without an ARD meeting.
How to Create an Amendment to the IEP
- Open the student’s record.
- Select Amendment to the Individualized Education Program (IEP) from the “Student Forms” dropdown menu.
- Click New Draft.
- Complete or edit the necessary sections.
- Save and lock the amendment according to district procedures.
